“People in all demographics and regions of the world are more connected than ever before to the products, issues, places, and individuals in their lives. This book recognizes that we’ve come to a place where people can represent their real identity--both personal and professional--and use the social filters on the Web to connect with the world around them.”

--Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer, Facebook

The ‘90s were about the World Wide Web of information and the power of linking web pages. Today it’s about the World Wide Web of people and the power of the social graph. Online social networks are fundamentally changing the way we live, work, and interact. They offer businesses immense opportunities to transform customer relationships for profit: opportunities that touch virtually every business function, from sales and marketing to recruiting, collaboration to executive decision-making, product development to innovation. In The Facebook Era, Clara Shih systematically outlines the business promise of social networking and shows how to transform that promise into reality.

Shih is singularly qualified to write this book: One of the world’s top business social networking thought leaders and practitioners, she created the first business application on Facebook and leads salesforce.com’s partnership with Facebook. Through case studies, examples, and a practical how-to guide, Shih helps individuals, companies, and organizations understand and take advantage of social networks to transform customer relationships for sales and marketing. Shih systematically identifies your best opportunities to use social networks to source new business opportunities, target marketing messages, find the best employees, and engage customers as true partners throughout the innovation cycle. Finally, she presents a detailed action plan for positioning your company to win in today’s radically new era: The Facebook Era.

1 out of 5 stars Please don't waste your money if you want to learn how to use FB.   May 5, 2010

I wish I had put more weight into the other one star review over the others. I, too, felt this was a waste of time. As a small business owner that is into social media, I was hoping for some insights as to what I could do to help my business. Didn't really gain anything. I seem to know just as much about facebook as she does by just being a casual user for the last couple of years. It seems to be geared toward CEOs of major companies (like Coca Cola) who are 75 and have never used social media. A third of the book is dedicated to telling the reader about how computers started as mainframes and moved all the way to PCs and mobile apps. This book seemed more like a college term paper than a book on how to use social media to help your business. I am upset that I have wasted my money but more importantly, my time.

5 out of 5 stars Great guidebook to social media and how to apply to your work or else!   April 20, 2010

I first learned about this book when I attended a marketing presentation given by Clara Shih.
Reading through the book, I could not stop taking notes how I can use and apply this to my work.
I am particularly interested in B2B in technical area marketing. It may be slow or still challenge to bring technical audience such as engineers to engage in this facebook window more than their datasheets or else, but it still is a great place to build your brand and expand gradually as Clara Shih mentioned the rising generation including engineers are savvy facebook generation!

I highly recommend this book to others.

5 out of 5 stars Clara Shih rocks! Teh Facebook Era book is very informative!   April 9, 2010

The Facebook Era is the BEST learning tool I have read/used in SO long! :)

I am not a techie as many that read this book may be so it is a refreshing read as it translates to "non-techies" like me also! I am doing my best to embrace and learn what I can about how to use Facebook as an effective business tool thus Clara's work/this book are helping me as well as helping many others I know.

I have a strong "non-social-media" sales/marketing background with a very specific niche group, corporate aviation, that unfortunately is not easily open to fully embracing social media yet thus I have to learn how to move forward by integrating social media into my work so I stay current with what is necessary in today's world which is how I connected with Clara, her work, and this book.

I really want to learn as much as possible about hypertargeting/social filtering thus I am going to follow Clara's further work. I am thankful to be able to learn from her, from her experiences, and her successes.

I am gifting this book to several of my friends as it is such a great learning resource.

I greatly value Calra's connectedness to mentoring and empowering others, people of all ages will benefit from her work/from her teaching although our "younger generations" truly need Clara's work thus I look forward to her continuing to trail blaze/forge ahead.

I look forward to more books written by her being released.

5 out of 5 stars A great primer on Social Media   April 8, 2010

The Facebook Era not only gives a good overview of the Social Media space, but is also very helpful in guiding the reader in utilizing Facebook as another source for marketing and increasing sales for a product and/or service. The author offers several ideas for generating revenue, including understanding how social capital plays an important role in creating new business opportunities. There are three chapters dedicated on how to engage your customers, getting your value proposition across to potential consumers, as well as steps on how to build and manage your social relationships, all very important parts to a successful online marketing strategy. The book also covers how Facebook can be utilized to garner customer feedback in order to strengthen the connection with current customers, which not only assists a business in better understanding how to possibly improve their product or service, but to bring new business through the door as well.

The author's creation and development of the first Facebook business application, Faceconnector, proves that her experience with the Social Media space validates that this book is a must have for any business that desires to create a successful online marketing strategy by tapping social networks. I am definitely looking forward to the second edition.

2 out of 5 stars A waste of time - unless you are into sales   April 6, 2010

This book is basically a big promotion for [...] and its products. The author has a very amateur writing style, and the material is hard to follow. She should stick with blogging, perhaps.

The book reads like an extended brochure for [...], the company she works for. The book is certainly geared to sales professionals. If that isn't you, don't waste your time.

In fact, there are many other books about using social networks for marketing purposes that do an excellent job and are worth your time to read. This isn't one of them.

There is no real depth or substance to this book.
